Within this blog, I talk about my own fan art of a video game versus featuring an orginial artist who created something new!
"Fan Art" = Art related to things you're a fan of~
Through the many years of the internet, we have always been inspired by our media and entertainment. There's tv shows, cartoons, movies, video games, local news etc. Our cartoons and video games always hold memorable characters. The movies and tv shows have memorable scenes. Your local home may celebrate holidays and historic events within local news. Many of which already come into the mind, yes? Being a fan of any of those can relate to other fans! If you like the new Netflix Show and your friend watches it- BAM: Fans. If you watched a movie/tv show as a kid, you can reconnect with another adult about it-BAM: You've been fans. And? What does that lead to? More creations and more work inspired by all those things. Ya see, it starts with just that.
A new character pops up in a popular game/cartoon/anime? --> New trending topic.
Suddenly your feeds are flooded. Whatever the social media, if your friends watch that cartoon.. you'll know about it right away. Sometimes it's a two edge sword HOWEVER for artists? It can be an opportunity. Folks are looking into what the "character" is all about. With a little research, you can catch on to what that is. The more details the better. Sketches and fan theories expolode and soon enough you are caught in whether or not to jump in.
An old movie/show touches into your nostolgia? --> New
If you've watched it, it's bound to have others watched it too. In fact, if you watched it a friend's place... that friend and you were instant fans. Your family might see it? Your lunch buddies at school? All of you remember the movie/show fondly. Artists can take that as an opportunity too! A scene from any episode becomes relatable because others watched it--> remember it! The characters, similar to before, had a following of their past and progress. Details about that one are already out and cannon, you can build upon it.
Pokemon | Generation 8 Starters
Pokemon is a vast video game series with loads of characters. It's focused on creatures that have various abilities and powers that make them called "Pokemon" The creatures are based off of the term "Pocket Monster" but when it came to the Untied States not everyone wanted to call them that. Pokemon became what it is today, because despite its origins, the series relates to all ages. The pokemon range throughout within their different elementals. We have ghost, grass, fire, water, dark, fairy, etc You get the concept! The main story of the games is collecting and battling Pokemon as a "Pokemon trainer" When you start the game you have three to choose from as your first Pokemon. Typically, it's a: Water, Fire, and Grass type. When the eighth generation came out in Pokemon Sword and Shield back in late 2019... the starters? They were everryyyrywheeerreeee.
Remember how before we talked about new characters? These three had fan art of all types. Sobble had the quirk of being teary eyed. Scorbunny notorious for being mischevious. Then Grookey? Why he was goofy, of course! Thus, I joined in the fun! I drew the picture seen above to illustate those three. I included a background to make it a print. Looking back, this picture is super old and cheesy. I still remember drawing the steam from Scorbunny's paws because he was laughing to hard at the Grookey. But I remembered that Sobble was sad because it lost it's favorite cupcake, even though I never played the games. That's right, I drew this without playing the game! Hahaha! That actually had a friend mad at me once.
But the point is, you can still create fan art without knowing the video game. Just like you can still read your favorite comics from other artists.
Which brings me to.... my featured artist!~
Violanie Briat -- https://twitter.com/violainebriat
Violanie made an original comic featuring a misunderstood neighbor, the guy is actually overly friendly and quite kind. In writing this blog back in 2021 she has already made the comic available online through a website. The comic itself was a lot of fun to read so I'm glad that others get to experience it themselves. PLUS- I get to see all the chapters I've missed when I took a break from reading it. Below is my favorite panel amongst the comic that I'd like to share.
https://twitter.com/violainebriat/status/1331325602238926848 -- The first thread to entire comic
In this panel we have a special peek inside Rodney's home, and the first thing he says is "Please don't mind the chair" amongst the almost hundreds of bunnies running around. It's clear that the artist chose to humor the bunnies as pets whilest the kind older man [ggg] is sweating in disbelief. He has no idea what to think of that sentence and the humor in the comic caught me in a fit of giggles for weeks. Every other day Vio would update the comic and I'd read to see what would happen in the next chapter. She labeled them by numbers, so you can see at the top that this is from Chapter 3. It the part where we get to see inside Rodney's home and we come to discover he loves bunnies! Despite his "creepy" nature towards everyone there's a hidden gem sweet side to him. It's rather lovely to see this character dynamic which is why I recommend you read the rest of her comic here.
Her comic is now featured on Webtoons, click the image above to open it in a new tab.
Webtoons offers many other comics you might enjoy but this one is the one I wished to feature. Thanks to Vio for keeping the comic alive and I look forward to catching up on this series. A link to her Twitter is provided below where she originally started to post the comic. Please like and share it if you like it too- let me know in the comments if you have a favorite webtoon I should check out! Thank you and until next we meet.
