The name comes from the core concept of the game, which can be said in one sentence.
"There's an imposter among us"

On a ship out in the wide ol galaxies of space, you're tasked to find out who in the crew is the imposter! The imposter being someone that wants to get rid of all of you. It's up to you to figure out who they are before you're gone too! Unless, of course, you are the one that wants the others gone?

Within the game, there's up to 10 players with the possibility of up to 3 Imposters. You're out in space within this wonderful crew as an astronaunt. As with any crewship, everyone has their part to do. Crewmates help span out on the ship to finish up what they must. There's helping to plan navigation, fueling the engines, cleaning the air chute, etc. They each have tasks in different areas. The tasks are fun flash mini games- once you get the hang of it they all click. All the while, there's a killer amongst them! Is it the girl in green? Or the guy in red that just left the Cafeteria?
The point of the game is to catch the Imposter before all of you are gone OR for the Imposter to get rid of the crew before tasks are done! Simple enough? Well, who's the bad guy smart guy. Heh.
As you start the game, it's randomly decided which side you'll be on. You'll either be a Crewmate or an Imposter. The screen flashes the big blue text that you're good or the red text that you're bad. It's not shown who's bad on the crew's screen. But if you're the imposter it shows only you and your partners on your screen. Yet the very first thing you see is.... this.

It's a standard rule to NOT have your microphone on.
Being silent through out the game is actually the true policy of Among Us. It's the most important part of not revealing anything to add to the mystery and gameplay of the game. When you start, this is established real early because of your initial reaction. The screen shows who you are after this, and if your mic catches your reaction BEFORE the game starts you might accidently reveal yourself too early.
"Hey what does Imposter mean Joe?" "Well, it means that we're gonna vote you out Jim"
The game is about deception, truth, and death. Deception if you're the imposter. Truth on whether or not you're not. And Death, because, there will be a lot of it. Through out the game it's important to respect all of that by muting yourself.
With that, the game is afoot.

You all load into the map and are ready to begin. Many players fan out real quick, and it's up to you to figure out what to do first. Checking your map, the game highlights the areas you need to go. The Yellow Exclamation Points go in the exact place of each of your tasks.
Once you're in the room the object in question is highlighted in yellow

From there, you'll select it and a mini game of the task pulls up.

This one goes into "Navigation" All you have to do is drag the ship across the line till the end. Games for the tasks are pretty simple. A lot of them being click and drag or click this or manage the mouse there etc. (And with crossplay, they have different controls yet the same end result)
Here's another task you may be able to catch on quicker

Connect the two that match, right?
Funny you say that... this task has to be the most highlighted part of this game's diversity. Minor detail, but I wanted to bring this in as another example. The colors are easy to spot here. You need the red to the red, blue to blue, etc. But something that was added were the shapes. Notice the stars? The circles? This was implmented for those that couldn't see the colors well. The developers did this to help those that were colorblind. From this, know that all tasks were taken into consideration of how they're played.
Yet, there's a still a lot more to get done. Many more tasks I could show, but as I said.. the more you play the more it clicks. But it's not always going to be smooth sailing. There may be complications that block you from doing whatcha need.
You see, our Imposter's task is to distract and kill the other crewmates. It's in their scheme to ensure victory by either attacking those at their weakest, or causing sabotage!

If you're playing any game without an emergency situation to fix, your imposter fell asleep. The perfect world where nothing comes up just doesn't exist. Especially in Among Us. Imposters have the option to "Sabotage" the ship. They can turn off the lights, cut communications or oxygen, or cause a reactor meltdown. Players have to be either quick and strategic or risk losing the game. This goes for both sides.
Imposters typically take advantage of the chaos, but a cool headed crewmate can prevent it. The emergencies vary in length and danger but no matter what- the crew needs to keep track of everything. Who can help re-engange oxygen? Where is everyone? Why did Yellow not come help? .....wait, is that a body on the...uhm... wow... okay, well. That's an excused absence I guess.

"Where was the body?"
Quite possibly the most said sentence through out the entire history of the game.
Meetings are held when a body is reported, and from there discussion begins. This is the time where everyone unmutes themselves to tell others what happened. Through out the game, you are the one to judge what was going on. That means you have to catch any lies or withhold any truths to be spoken. Yellow was by Navigation. Didn't you see Red by the Cafeteria? If you did, then that's where he was. His alibi catches on. Green says she saw Red by Admin, and he killed Yellow. Right off the bat, you can speak up for Red.
The meetings then go into the voting stage, who is the Imposter?
From there, everyone votes! Your friend says it's Red, but you tell them you saw Red. Green accuses Red still, and Purple believes Red. Purple votes for Red to leave the ship. Green has already made her vote. It's up to you to control the chaos but in the end... you must take your vote. There's the option to skip, but do you risk it? Do you vote for Green? Is Green mistaken and she's actually innocent?
Regardless, someone is ejected.

WOW! OKAY- so- I may have forgotten something. Imposters can vent around the map. Go figure.
And that's it. That's the basics of the game.
Note: The Among Us Update includes up to 15 players now!
If you're reading this and you've never played, I hope that clears things up. If you've already played like 100 matches, I hope you can show this to your friend to play your 101st. There's more maps and tasks than mentioned, so trust me there's a LOT of elements in this. The changes and updates are very well put together. The developers and coders are pretty keen on it. The game was originally released in 2018 believe it or not.

Want more stats and more numbers? Here's a report of Among Us Stats from Business of Apps
Among Us is a game that's not going anywhere any time soon.
Heck, when it did get crazy popular I was hesitate. I thought it was overhyped. But the more I played the more I liked it. It had a lot of potential in whoever I played with. I highly encourage you to do it with friends. Laughing and lying will go hand in hand, but it's all in good fun! It might surpise you how good your team is or becomes for that matter. The game is good in doses, heh.
I've had Among Us in my gallery on Steam for while. It has to be one of my main multiplayer games. Back in the beginning of the year, I wrote about all my group games that I loved the best! I wasn't as a dedicated player back then as I am now though hehehe
Oh, and by the way.....
There's still more to come ;3
